What is a compounded medication?

Dispensing and compounding are not the same thing. Dispensing means handing a patient a product that was already manufactured. Compounding means our pharmacists prepare the medication themselves from raw pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, following a licensed prescriber’s order written for that specific patient. Ohio providers and patients use our compounding services when manufactured options leave a clinical gap. The four most common gaps look like this.

  • Dose precision for patients who need a strength that no manufactured product provides. This is a common requirement in pediatric care, weight-based protocols, and hormone therapy titration.
  • Consolidated preparations that merge two or more medications into one dose, reducing the daily pill count for patients managing multiple concurrent therapies.
